Why 1099 and W-2 taxes differ

01

The Hidden Employer Tax

Your employer pays 7.65% of your salary in matching payroll taxes that never appear on your paycheck. As a 1099 contractor, you capture that money in your rate but also pay it yourself in SE tax.

02

The SE Tax Deduction

The IRS lets 1099 contractors deduct half of their SE tax from gross income before calculating federal income tax. This partial offset is why the break-even rate is not a clean 2x the employee FICA gap.

03

Beyond Taxes

This calculator covers only the tax difference. Contractors also pay for health insurance, retirement, and have no paid leave. Add 15-20% on top of the tax break-even for a full benefits adjustment.
